Eat Healthy For Reasonable Cost With These Tips
I hear it all the time, “I’d love to eat healthy but it’s too expensive”. I don’t disagree that trying to go all organic is more expensive than buying the hamburger on sale at the local store for .99 cents a pound. But there is one thing to consider when making the choice to feed yourself with meets or poultry that is shot full of steroids and fed low budget grains it’s entire life and opting to eat healthy. What will the long term effect be on your body? Is it cheaper to go through a horrible sickness than it is to spend an extra couple hundred bucks a month to eat healthy? Here are some tips to lighten the financial burden for going organic while staying within your current budget.
Can The Soda
First thing to do is quit drinking soft drinks full of sugar and artificial flavors that are unhealthy. Replace them with good old agua fria (cold water). It may sound boring but it doesn’t have to be! Invest in a Sodastream carbonated water maker. You can find lots of recipes to make healthy, flavorful, water. You’ll not only be getting rid of the sugar and artificial flavors that are horrible for you but helping the environment as well by no longer using cans and plastic bottles.
Dump The Junk Food
There are plenty of alternatives to junk food that will not only be healthy but save you money. Buying a quick $1.20 candy bar and $2.00 soda while on the un ads up. Plus it will not make you feel full and while the sugar will give you some brief energy, it will burn off within 15 minutes. Never go shopping when you are hungry. Make a list of exactly what you are going to buy. Substitute yogurt for ice cream or by ice cream in 4 oz containers and only eat one per evening. If you have to eat candy, make it dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa. You can find tons of recipes for healthier, homemade deserts on the web.
Shop At Local Farmers Markets
Just about every city now has at least one day where local farmers set up and sell fruits and vegetables. This is not only a great way to support local farmers, it’s a great place to buy organic fruits and vegetables at a good price. Not sure where your local farmers market is located? Check you city’s website under events or gold your city make plus farmers market.
Whole Foods Markets have spread throughout California. They are not the only stores that offer organic beef and poultry. We have many other local markets. One of the biggest complaints about eating organic is the cost. Next time you re in a local market, sign up for their email list. Once a week you will get an email with specials. Whenever there is a sale on one of your favorites, pack you freezer! I love organic NY strip steak but at $16.99 a pound, I don’t buy it too often. However, when it’s on sale for $8.99, I pack my freezer. (You can find a good freezer for the garage for very reasonable prices these day and if you have Amazon Prime, they ship for free.
Catch Your Dinner
Whether you live in the mountains near lakes and streams or coastal by the ocean, go fishing! Being outdoors is not only good for the body and soul but nothing is fresher than pulling your own catch out of the water! It’s a good workout too! Win, win.
Check For “Managers Specials”
I know where the “managers specials” sections are for every grocery store I shop. These are foods that have reached or are near expiration date. Usually these meats come with 50% discount, at least 30%. You need to either cook the meat or freeze it that day
