Compound that with the holidays and you can find yourself packing on a lot of extra weight over the 5 weeks or so of celebrating. It’s not just the treats and parties that lead to this time of year being when people gain the most weight of anytime of year. What does being a day person mean anyway? To me it means being a grown up. Remember being in college, burning the candle at both ends with no problem? Staying up into the wee morning hours to hang with friends or study for mid terms and finals. This more than likely led to doing the same throughout your 20’s, though you were probably watching the late show for a good laugh before sleep. 1) Exercise: The single most important thing you can do to increase metabolism is to start exercising. An efficient and toned body increases metabolism.  It also helps you more effectively burn through calories. You’ll find as you build more muscle, that your level of hunger also increases. With more muscle you’ll have a better ability to burn calories. Create a regimen that includes at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week. Also, include strength training routines at least two days per week.

packing on the poundsFootball season’s here which is exciting and sad. Exciting because I love football! Sad because another summer is over. I hope you had a great summer. Football season is great but it is also a time to really watch out you don’t pack on the pounds. With beach days, pool parties, river trips, it’s easy to make sure you keep fit so you look good with your shirt off. Now, however, football season not only brings fun parties with beer and junk food but for many the colder months are around the corner making it easy to hide some extra fat around the belly. Don’t do it! Whether you go to the games, go watch them at a bar or have friends over, it’s easy to consume lots of calories. Even though I’m sure most of you use Sunday’s as your day to eat anything, remember to moderate. Eat foods high in protein which will not only fill you up quicker but keep you full longer. Eat small portions. Wait at least 20 minutes between eating to give the food a chance to fill your stomach. If drinking beer, have a glass of water  at the same time. Moderate! And have fun. – Plan your meals and snacks. Sure, it takes a little time, but investing a little time in meal planning makes losing weight much easier. In addition, once you factor the time you would spend sitting in drive thru lines, you may end up ahead time-wise. Planning meals and snacks doesn’t have to be complicated. Cook on the weekends and prep lunches and dinners for the week. Have a supply of healthy, easy to grab foods available, for days when you just can’t wait to eat. Yogurt, fruit, cheese, and nuts all make good choices when you need to get something quick.
